CRATER LAKE, NEW HAMPSHIRE—July 15, 1982

Randy opened his eyes to the black sky.

He wasn’t dead.

The pain was unbearable though. It felt like his whole body was burning up. He felt hands on him, and he cried out. Arms encircled him, and he was gently lifted.

He tried to scream, but nothing came out. And then he passed out.

He awoke. How much time had elapsed? It was still dark, but he couldn’t see the sky. A bandage covered his face and head, but he could see out of his left eye. Was he in the hospital? No, the ceiling was old and dirty. It was wood. Hanging on the wall was a moose head.

He was still in horrible pain. He had never experienced anything like it.

It was now light. Had he fallen asleep again? The pain in his face … on the top of his head … on his chest … on his back… all unbearable. Maybe not unbearable. After all, he was still alive. What had happened?

The boat. The gunfire. The explosion. Drowning. But he didn’t drown. He was in a bed in a building. Moving his head was painful, but he tried his best to look around with his one good eye. It was a house. It looked more like a cabin, and he was in a bedroom.

Movement! Someone was approaching. Suddenly a man was looking down at him. He had a black beard and a weathered face.

“Welcome back to the world,” he said.
